Beloved Community – Poster Created for Black History Month Event at Fordham

Description
I was asked by one of my professors to create a poster for an event. I collaborated with the facilitators of the event and a professor of mine. They expressed that they wanted a bright color scheme, but all other design choices were left up to me. My design process started with a small bit of research. I knew that I wanted to include some form of graphic, so I pulled from prior knowledge about West African culture. I knew about Adinkra symbols and I thought it could be a good idea to include one or some as a graphic on the poster. I found the symbol called Eban, or the Fence, which symbolizes love, safety, and security. Here is a quote about the symbol's meaning from The University of Michigan's Department of Afro-American and African Studies: "A home which has a fence around it is considered to be an ideal residence. The fence symbolically separates and secures the family from the outside. Because of the security and the protection that a fence affords, the symbol is also associated with the security and safety one finds in love." This felt very fitting for the concept of a Beloved Community. The cover photo is the poster dimensions and the following images are reformatted versions for an Instagram grid post, an Instagram stories post, and a version to be displayed on a television. I used Adobe Illustrator for this project.
